GIS for Managers

Description of Course

This four-hour course provides coastal resource managers with an opportunity to understand the basics of geographic information systems (GIS) through hands-on computer training. By the end of the course, managers should be able to

  • Define a GIS
  • Describe the key capabilities and power of a GIS
  • Know certain GIS terms and concepts
  • Recognize certain limitations of a GIS

This training will focus on specific coastal-related problems and how a GIS might be used to solve them. With this approach, managers are exposed to familiar scenarios and common data sets, which vividly illustrate the potential of GIS to assist in the workplace.

Prerequisites

Classes are limited to current Center partners from the non-profit, local, state, and federal government sectors.

Course Dates

Course is currently being updated to include new technologies. The anticipated completion date of the update is Spring 2008.
