One-Stop Shopping for Socioeconomic Data

Using socioeconomic data can help coastal and resource managers gain a better understanding of geographic trends in human behavior, learn the relationship between humans and the environment, and help make more informed decisions.

In dealing with socioeconomic data, coastal managers may encounter the following:

bullet Data can be expensive
bullet Data compilation, customization, and synthesis are time consuming
bullet Historical data are usually not available for trend assessments
bullet Data are not in a format to allow analysis such as by coastal area or watershed

The goal of the STICS Web site is to increase awareness and access to socioeconomic data by providing multiple tools to analyze and generate reports. In one easy-to-use application STICS offers georeferenced demographic data from the U.S. Census Bureau for the last four censuses (1970, 1980, 1990, 2000) and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) data (1969 to 2000). The types of data accessible include population, age, racial and ethnic composition, income distribution, residential mobility, personal income, and employment data.

The STICS Web site provides several ways for coastal managers to customize, organize, and download socioeconomic information. Knowledge of database management is not required, and the Web site directs the user to the appropriate tools according to need.

Mapping Census 2000 Tool Mapping Census 2000 Tool
This allows users to view several Census geographical areas and provides Census 2000 data with more variables than what is offered in the trends database
Summary Profile Reports Summary Profile Reports
By geographic area of interest, allows users to create a standard profile report highlighting U.S. Census data or U.S. BEA data.
Custom Graphic Custom Graphic
Produces a custom graphic based on user-selected geographic, temporal, and variable parameters
Significance Test Significance Test
Determines the statistical significance of the difference in distribution of two study areas
