Overview: Humpback Whales 101

The unit’s main focus is on whale behavior while in the mating and nursing grounds in Hawai‘i. Like researchers, students follow the scientific inquiry process to answer questions.Through hands-on lab activities and fun games that complement lessons, students replicate the feeding behaviors of whales, and create bar graphs comparing the feeding styles of baleen and toothed whales. During review exercises, students engage in a game, pantomime whale behaviors and match photographs of whale flippers with descriptive cards.
