Tsunami Mitigation Report

The Tsunami Mitigation Report is an ongoing research project to review existing national, state, and local policies, ordinances, plans, and activities that support mitigating the impacts of tsunamis. This research will be used to support tsunami mitigation efforts in the U.S. Pacific Islands.

For more information on the Tsunami Mitigation Report, contact nos.csc.psc@noaa.gov.

Pacific Islands Tsunami Inundation Modeling Project

The NOAA Pacific Services Center and the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Lab (PMEL) are working together to model tsunami inundation for three U.S. Pacific Island jurisdictions: Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The Pacific Islands tsunami inundation modeling is an ongoing project resulting from partnerships established through the Pacific Risk Management `Ohana (PRiMO). PRiMO continues to work with local agencies within each jurisdiction to provide valuable data that can be used to guide tsunami mitigation activities, such as evacuation planning and policy development.

Hawai`i Coastal Hazard Mitigation Guidebook

The NOAA Pacific Services Center partnered with the State of Hawai`i and the University of Hawai`i Sea Grant College Program to write the Hawai`i Coastal Hazard Mitigation Guidebook. The guidebook is a resource to help reduce the risk to coastal development by planning for natural hazards such as erosion, flooding, tsunamis, and hurricanes.

Hawai`i HAZUS-MH Hurricane Iniki Study

The NOAA Pacific Services Center, in partnership with the Hawai`i Coastal Zone Management Program, contracted with Martin and Chock Associates to evaluate the Hazards U.S. Multi-Hazard (HAZUS-MH) Hurricane Module for application in Hawai`i. The project used a retrofitted damage database from Hurricane Iniki, which struck Kaua`i in September of 1992, to learn more about how the model performs.

Hawai`i Tsunami Hazard Information Service

The Tsunami Hazard Information Service provides Hawai`i residents and visitors with easy, on-line access to the state's tsunami evacuation zone maps, as well as information about potential risks, ways to prepare, actions to take in the event of a tsunami. This service was created by the NOAA Pacific Services Center and many local partners. The service is currently being hosted by the State of Hawai`i.
