Pacific Islands Spatial
Training
Lead Agency
NOAA Pacific Services Center (PSC).
Participating Jurisdictions
American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and Hawai‘i.
Goal
Build sustainable capacity and knowledge in spatial technologies in the Pacific
Island coastal management communities through continual opportunities for training
and technical support.
Description
Reliable training and technical support in geographic information systems (GIS)
and spatial technologies is not always easy to find in the islands. PSC can play
a strong role with the island coastal communities by providing continual opportunities
for introductory, intermediate, and advanced spatial technology training, in addition
to providing technical support as spatial technologies are integrated into their
management activities and functions. This project focuses on bringing training
opportunities to the islands. It also provides a mechanism for continual technical
support.
Currently, numerous training opportunities are being pursued. These include
Coastal Remote Sensing, Introduction to ArcGIS, Coastal Applications for ArcGIS,
GIS for Coastal Managers, Global Positioning System (GPS) in the Pacific Islands,
and Fundamentals of Spatial Analysis.
Outcome
Increased capacity in spatial technologies within the islands.
