Mitigation Strategies for Individuals

One of the biggest challenges associated with earthquake-tsunami risks in the Pacific Northwest is persuading public entities, private businesses, and individuals to take actions and make investments to mitigate potentially catastrophic damage from natural hazards, especially when return intervals are long and difficult to predict.

Several federal and state agencies have put together fact sheets outlining what individuals can do to reduce impacts from natural hazards, specifically earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis. Access the links below for more information.

  • Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) Earthquake Fact Sheet - Fact sheet from Institute for Business and Home Safety (IBHS) describing what individuals can do to protect their homes and personal property from earthquake damage.

  • FEMA Earthquake Fact Sheet - Federal Emergency Management Agency publication addressing what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.

  • FEMA Tsunami Fact Sheet - A similar Federal Emergency Management Agency publication for tsunami response.

  • WMD-EMD Tsunami Fact Sheet - Washington Military Department Emergency Management Division publication about what to do in the event of a tsunami. This fact sheet with evacuation maps for Pacific County, Washington, can also be accessed in PDF format Tsunami Fact Sheet (PDF). (Warning! May take several minutes to download)

  • USGS Landslide Fact Sheet - United States Geological Survey publication about landslide hazards and how to mitigate.
