General Hazards Information
  • Savage Earth - Web site of the Public Broadcasting System series on natural disasters, including tsunamis and earthquakes.
  • Tsunami! - Tsunami! has been developed to provide general information about tsunamis. Directed to a broad audience, the site contains information about the mechanisms of tsunami generation and propagation, the impact of tsunamis on humankind, and the Tsunami Warning System.
  • Tsunamis and Earthquakes - Animations and virtual reality models of tsunamis, including hypothetical tsunami events along the Pacific Northwest Coast.
  • USGS Reducing Earthquake Hazards- Run by the U.S. Geological Survey's Geologic Division, this site provides an overview of earthquakes and earthquake research in the country.

Events in the Pacific Northwest

  • Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest - An overview created by the Geophysics Group at the University of Washington of the hazard, risk, and vulnerability to earthquake hazards in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Impact of Tsunamis on Oregon Coastal Communities - Developed by the Center for Coastal and Land-Margin Research at the Oregon Graduate Institute, this site includes information, images, and animations of the implications of a tsunami event in the Pacific Northwest.
  • Pacific Tsunami Museum - A good information source for public education, oral histories of tsunami events, and the science of tsunamis in the Pacific Basin.

Disaster Response

  • American Red Cross Disaster Services - The American Red Cross Disaster Services works to ensure nationwide disaster planning, preparedness, community disaster education, mitigation, and response.
  • Fact Sheet: Earthquakes - Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) publication addressing what to do before, during, and after an earthquake.
  • Fact Sheet: Tsunamis - A similar FEMA publication for tsunami response.
  • Lincoln County, Oregon Emergency Services - Provides emergency information about earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, floods, river levels, road conditions, planning and education, current weather conditions, and oil spills.

Natural Hazards Mitigation Efforts

  • Earthquake Mitigation and Education - Developed by the Association of Bay Area Governments in California, this site is an excellent clearinghouse for general earthquake information and mitigation options for the private sector.
  • National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program - A program designed to reduce the impact of tsunamis through hazard assessment, warning guidance, and mitigation.
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency - Home page of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), an independent federal agency working to reduce loss of life and property and protect the nation's critical infrastructure from all types of hazards.
  • Oregon Coastal Management Plan - Provides an overview of the existing coastal natural hazards planning and management framework for the state of Oregon.
  • Institute for Business and Home Safety - Organization whose goal is to reduce property damage and loss of life from natural disasters through the use of structural and nonstructural initiatives.

Regional Research Groups

Earthquakes

  • Oregon Department of Geology - Web site for the Earthquake Hazards Program maintained by the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries (DOGAMI).
  • Oregon State University - Home page of the Geophysics Program, this site contains information about research activities and earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest.
  • University of Oregon - Describes current and completed research for seismic hazards in the Pacific Northwest by the Neotectonics group under the Department of Geological Sciences.
  • University of Washington - Geophysics Program home page, which contains a significant amount of information about seismicity in the Pacific Northwest.

Tsunamis

Documentation of Recent Events
  • July 17, 1998, Papua New Guinea Tsunami - Results of the 2nd International Tsunami Survey Team post-tsunami survey, including geological studies, animation, and information from the U.S. Geological Survey.
  • Tsunami Field Survey Photographs - An archive of digital images maintained by Dr. Costas Synolakis of the University of Southern California, acquired during recent tsunami field surveys.
Warning Centers Ports and Harbors On-line Libraries and Search Engines
  • Coastal Management Web - This clearinghouse is an independent venture focusing on coastal management issues.
  • HazardNet - This site is a prototype natural and technological hazard information-sharing network. The site's goal is to enhance the timeliness, quality, quantity, specificity, and accessibility of information to individuals and groups concerned with preventing, mitigating, or preparing for large-scale natural and technological emergencies.
  • National Geophysical Data Center Tsunami Database - Searchable database of information on tsunami events from 49 B.C. to the present in the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, and the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.
  • Sea Grant Hazards Library Network - The purpose of HazNet is to enhance the Sea Grant network's contribution to reducing loss of human life, property, and environmental resources from coastal hazards in the U.S. It provides an organizational framework through which hazard mitigation information is more effectively and efficiently shared among Sea Grant network programs and outside collaborators.
