Introduction

Online map servers utilize mapping applications such as ArcView® Internet Map Server (IMS), which enable users to create digital maps from geographic information stored at remote locations. Though IMSs are typically not as robust as a desk top GIS, they provide the user with an effective means by which to view and manipulate spatial data before deciding to download it to local systems. The Protecting our Ports and Harbors Web site uses ArcIMS to produce and serve maps over the Internet.
