How to use the Protecting our Ports and Harbors
Online Mapping Application

The Protecting our Ports and Harbors Online Mapping Application is a "server" side application, meaning all processing is handled by the server. In order to receive a map, you must send a "request" to the server. The server will process your request and return to you the desired map.

Three kinds of "control" options are available in the GIS that enable you to execute a number of functions. Control options, which include "navigation and scale tools," "map changing tools," and "data attribute information tools," are explained below.

Map Changing Tools

  • Refresh Layers: displays map with currently selected features.

To turn individual features on or off, either check or un check the check box check box next to each data layer (Theme), in the "Legend Area". Next, click the "Refresh Layers" button to display a new map that includes the features you have selected.

  • Legend Area: this lists all data layers (Themes) and their legends.

To view a full legend (some data layers can be classified with multiple values or unique values) for a specific data layer (Theme), click on the check box check box next to the data layer (Theme) of choice, in the "Legend Area". The legend will appear.

  • Active data layers: this determines which data layer (Theme) will be "active" for identifying features.

In order to make a data layer (Theme) active, click on the data layer (Theme) name in the "Legend Area".

Navigation and Scale Controls

  • Zoom In: decreases map scale

Click on the zoom-in icon zoom in icon , to enable this function, then click a point of interest on the map. The map server will produce a new, smaller-scaled map centered on the point you selected. You can also adjust your zooming scale factor for this control.

  • Zoom Out: increases map scale

Click on the zoom-out icon zoom out icon , to enable this function, then click a point of interest on the map. The map server will produce a new, larger-scaled map centered on the point you selected. You can also adjust your zooming scale factor for this control.

  • Zoom to Full Extent: reverts to the full spatial extent of the data layers

Click the "Full Extent" button. The server will automatically provide the full extent map.

  • Pan: re-centers the current map at the same scale

Click on the pan icon pan icon , to enable this function. Next click a point of interest on the map, hold down the left mouse button while dragging the map with the cursor in the direction of choice. The map server will produce a new map centered on the point you selected. The new map will be in the same scale as the previous map.

Data Attribute Information Tools

  • Identify Feature: returns tabular information, or "attributes" about a unique feature on a map

To identify features on the map first click the box labeled "active" on the data layer (Theme) of interest, then select the "Identify" identify icon icon . Next click a point of interest on the map. "Attributes" associated with the feature you identified will appear at the bottom of the page.

  • Query: creates custom queries against the active layer.

Use the layer list to set the "active" layer. Next click on the query icon query icon. A query box, with several options, will appear in the bottom frame of the browser. Choose the "Field", "Operator", and "Values", to have values appear in the text box, click on the "Get Sample" button, then click on the "Add to Query String". Finally, click the "Execute" button. After you have queried, the selected features will be highlighted in the map and their attributes will appear in the bottom frame of the browser.

  • Select Features on Active Layer with Rectangle: use this tool to select features based on a rectangle shape you draw in the map with your mouse

Use the Layer List to set the active layer. With the mouse pointer, drag a rectangle over the features of the active layer you wish to select. The selected features will be highlighted in the map and their attributes will appear in the bottom frame of the browser.

  • Clear Selection: this feature unselects any currently selected features.

Click on the "Clear Selection" button to clear all selected features.

  • Print: create a printout of your map including a legend, title, north arrow, scale bar, and overview map.

Click on the printer icon printer icon to print a map.
