The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center with the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (A*NCCC), has developed a high-resolution digital shoreline that is suitable for use in a geographic information system (GIS). A*NCCC volunteers were trained by the Center's spatial data analysts on the basics of GIS and the appropriate hardware and software for the project; with this knowledge and equipment an accurate digital vector shoreline was created from scanned raster copies of archived maps. These maps were based on tide-controlled photography used to develop the NOAA nautical charts. The Center and its partners automated the compilation and integration of, and access to the final digital product. The shoreline provided on this CD-ROM covers South Carolina. To obtain shoreline data for other areas, visit the Center's web page.
This data set is located on volume 1 of this CD-ROM set in the /data/shore directory and it is called scshore.shp. To view the full Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata record for the data set, click here.
