Metadata Reference Information

General Information

The following information is to be used as a reference for element definitions. The elements in the dictionary below share the same numbering scheme of those in the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata, and in the Metadata Creation Tool. For example, the element "abstract" is numbered 1.2.1 in the dictionary below, the tool, and the metadata content standard. If further assistance is needed, the "Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata" (green workbook) may be used.

8.1 Originator: The name of an organization or individual that developed the data set. If you want to enter an originator for the first time, click cancel and you will be prompted to do so. If you want to use an existing .dbf file, choose the originator id from the provided list.

8.9 Other Citation Details: Any other information that may be necessary to complete the citation. For example, a brief description of the larger work could be entered, if applicable. This section may be entered as a text file and saved to your working directory where it can be retrieved, or you may type the other citation details, if necessary.

1.2.1 Abstract: A brief narrative summary of the data set. The abstract is stored in a .dbf file in the working directory.

1.5 Spatial Domain: The geographic aerial domain of the data set. The tool gives you the option of converting your bounding coordinates to decimal degrees. If you wish to do this, choose the coordinate system that you want to convert from, and the program will automatically perform the conversion. If you wish to leave the bounding coordinates in their original state, click no. Whichever choice you make, the program automatically extracts bounding coordinates from the file.
