LIDAR Project File Descriptions

The ArcView® project files are located in the root directory on the CD-ROM. To open the project files, start ArcView, then under the File pull-down menu go to Open Project. From the Dialog box, point to the CD-ROM drive and select lidar.apr.

Users with ArcView Spatial Analyst®, an extension that allows spatial modeling and analysis to be preformed in ArcView, will be able to manipulate the grid data. A start up script determines the ArcView version number and whether the extension exists and then opens the appropriate project file from within the data directory. For users that do not have Spatial Analyst, the grids will be loaded as images for viewing purposes only. Please be aware that the ArcView project file will load at different speeds depending on the user's computer hardware. It may take up to 5 minutes for the project to load on your computer.

The ArcView LIDAR Project File:

The LIDAR project file contains LIDAR beach mapping data displayed in their native point format, as contours, and also as grid data. The data are divided into four separate views and combined with ancillary data sets. A metadata button, symbolized by an M icon, has been added to the View documents, to provide easy access to a Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC)-compliant metadata record for the active themes in the view.

Please Note:

In order to make this project file compatible across various platforms, a system check script is run along with a query for the Spatial Analyst extension. Once these parameters are determined, the appropriate project file is opened from within the data directory.

Saving Changes to the ArcView Project File:

If changes are made to the project file, save the project to your local hard drive using the Save File As option from the File pull-down menu in the Project Window. In order to use this new saved version of your project file the CD-ROM containing the data must be inserted in your CD-ROM drive.
