Using remote sensing technology as a tool
for hazards planning and damage assessment

Introduction

This section of the CD-ROM highlights the value of satellite imagery and remote sensing for use in hazard planning and post-event damage assessment.  These images offer a synoptic, regional view of an area both before and after a hazard event.  In a pre-disaster planning mode, they can be used to analyze a region's resources at risk. Coupling satellite images with hazard model output and 3-dimensional surfaces, allows for the development of unique analytical and educational products.  In a post-disaster mode, access to a time series of satellite images provides the opportunity to assess regional land cover changes caused by a major hazard event. To view a reference list on emerging remote sensing technology and remote sensing companies, please visit the General Data Resources section of the CD-ROM.
