This section provides general operating instructions for installing Internet browsers.

Installation and Operation of the Web Browsers:

  1. Insert the CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. If you have a web browser already installed, start the browser application. From the browser, pull down the File Menu, select Open File, and point to your CD-ROM drive. Click on the startup.htm file, and click OK.
  3. If you do not have a web browser or a web browser that is HTML 2.0 compliant, Microsoft Internet Explorer® and Netscape Communicator® are provided on this CD-ROM. Follow the directions below to install one of these browsers onto your computer's hard drive.



Instructions for Installing Microsoft Internet Explorer®

To load Microsoft Internet Explorer, examine the available executables. Select the executable that corresponds to your computer's operating system.

  • Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95 and Windows 98 users: double click on iew958nt.exe and follow the instructions to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 on your hard drive.
  • Windows NT 3.5.1 and Windows 3.1 users: double click on iew31n35.exe and follow the instructions to install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 on your hard drive.
  • Macintosh users should double click on the file ie45.sea or is it ie45mac.exe. Follow the directions on your screen.

Notes:

  • If you have Microsoft's Windows 95, a copy of Microsoft Explorer may already be loaded onto your machine.

  •       
  • There are no Microsoft Explorer executables available for UNIX-based machines.

  •       
  • For best viewing, enlarge the web browser to full screen size.

Due to the NOAA-CSC's licensing agreement, the end-user does not have to register the browser with Microsoft as explained in the start-up window. If the end-user would like to register the browser out of courtesy to Microsoft, or to be placed onto Microsoft's mailing list for future information, then you may contact them directly.

Instructions for Installing Netscape Communicator®

To load Netscape, examine the available executables. Select the executable that corresponds to your system's operating system.

  • Windows NT, Windows 95 and Windows 98 users: double click on cc32e461.exe and follow the instructions to install Netscape Communicator to your hard drive.
  • Macintosh users should copy the Comm4_61_Complete_EX.bin file to the hard drive and use StuffIt to convert this file into a Macintosh executable. Run this executable to install Netscape Communicator.

Due to the NOAA-CSC's licensing agreement, the end-user does not have to register the browser with Netscape as explained in the start-up window. If the end-user would like to register the browser out of courtesy to Netscape, or to be placed onto Netscape's mailing list for future information, then you may contact them directly.
