The animations are available in animated GIF (.GIF), reduced image size animated GIF, Audio Video Interleave (.AVI), JAVA Applet, and JavaScript formats. **Note: the animations may take some time to open depending upon connection speed.** Visit the Southeast River Forecast Center to view flood inundation maps, produced for potential or actual flood events, for the Tar River Basin, North Carolina. Choose a location below. GreenvilleThe following animations are for September 15 to 20, 1999, and are based on USGS Gage 02084000 (Tar River at Greenville) 15-Minute Stage Data.
Rocky MountThe following animations are for September 15 to 16, 1999, and are based on USGS Gage 02082585 (Tar River at NC 97 at Rocky Mount) 15-Minute Stage Data.
TarboroThe following animations are for September 16, 1999, and are based on USGS Gage 02083500 (Tar River at Tarboro) 15-Minute Stage Data.
Animation InformationMaps were created by subtracting river stage elevations from LIDAR-derived, bare earth elevation data (5-foot Digital Elevation Model) using standard GIS software. (Note: No hydraulic models were used to derive these maps. These maps depict an approximated inundation area based on a proximity to one USGS gage location. Local variations in water surface are not taken into account on these maps. These maps are for illustrative representation only and should not be used for planning or permitting purposes.) Two animation versions of the same time series data are displayed. One version has black and white aerial photography as a base layer and the other has vector road and urban boundaries as base layers. Tarboro 3D AnimationsTarboro Flood
This animation was created by passing a water surface plane through the DEM at 1-foot increments and capturing the image. A false color, infrared digital orthophoto quarter quadrangle was draped on the DEM to show texture of the land surface. A suite of images was then converted into an animation of the water surface intersecting the ground surface, mimicking a flooding scenario. This animation depicts the approximate flooding that occurred during Hurricane Floyd in Tarboro, North Carolina near the USGS Gage 02083500 (Tar River at Tarboro). This animation is an approximation and is not based on hydraulic model data. It is for demonstration purposes only and should not be used for planning or permitting purposes. Tarboro Bare Earth
