Ideas for the Next Issue

As the 1900s come to an end, the editors of Coastal Services are working on a special edition of the magazine for January/February 2000. The expanded edition will share past successes, explore future issues, examine new technology, and provide a vision for coastal management in the coming century.

Articles you will find in the special issue include:

  • A region by region examination of coastal management accomplishments in the past 10 years. There also will be a look into the future at the issues managers will face in the coming decade.

  • A look at how new technology may benefit coastal resource managers. We will go beyond Global Positioning Systems (GPS), geographic information systems (GIS), and the Internet to see if other tools on the horizon are appropriate for coastal management.

  • A guest editorial by Peter Douglas, executive director of the California Coastal Commission, exploring what the role of coastal managers will be in the future and providing a vision for where coastal management should be going.
