The NOAA Coastal Services Center has developed methodology to help local and state governments determine and prioritize their localities' vulnerability to coastal hazards.
This model is showcased in a newly released CD-ROM, Community Vulnerability Assessment Tool. This how-to guide is designed for all coastal communities. Components of the guide include instructions on prioritizing the degree to which various segments of the community are at risk; examining the location, durability, and use of critical facilities; assessing potential environmental concerns; understanding an area's economic vulnerability; and capitalizing on prudent mitigation opportunities.
The CD-ROM includes a tutorial, a case study, and information about various data management tools. New Hanover County, North Carolina, is the featured case study.
