Coastal Zone 99

Coastal Zone 99 (CZ99), the largest international conference for coastal resource managers, will be held in San Diego, California July 24 through 30. See the contact information at the end of this article to get details about the sessions profiled below and others offered by the Center.

Coastal Volunteers in Action

Wednesday, July 28: 9 to 10:30 a.m.

It takes some work to get good volunteers, train them, and keep them focused. This plenary session, which promises to be one of the most exciting at CZ99, includes the unveiling of a web site for volunteers and coastal organizations, a take-home video, and presentations about creating a successful volunteer program.

ESRI's GIS Map Gallery Reception

Monday, July 26: 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI®) produces widely used GIS software. The ESRI user conference, held during the same week as CZ99, will be attended by over 9,000 people. ESRI invites CZ99 participants to join them for a reception at the San Diego Convention Center. Exhibited at this reception will be hundreds of maps created by GIS users. Many of these maps and demonstrations focus on coastal GIS work created by the Center, state partners, and other NOAA divisions.

Getting the Most Out of Collaborative Processes: A Workshop for Government Agency Conveners and Participants

Monday, July 26: 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This workshop provides essential information for individuals, agencies, or organizations wanting to learn how to use collaborative processes more effectively. The workshop will focus on what environmental dispute resolution professionals have identified as "best practices" for convening and participating in collaborative or consensus-building processes. Pre-registration is required.

Workshop on GIS for Integrated Coastal Zone Managers

Tuesday, July 27: 10:50 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; 2 to 4 p.m.

This hands-on instruction is for managers (not the technicians!) who want to learn how this new technology can benefit their program. Certified ESRI trainers from the NOAA Coastal Services Center will lead this introductory course. Practical applications and new software options will be demonstrated. Pre-registration may be required for this class; see the Center's web site for information.
