Beach Grooming: Raking Through the Issues in California

Lines on a beach interrupted by one footprint indicate that a beach was mechanically raked to remove trash left by beach goers, as well as kelp and debris washed ashore by the tides. Raking also can sweep away small creatures that are vital to ecosystem health. The cover story looks at a collaborative effort in California to develop and encourage more ecologically friendly beach management practices.
