Remote Sensing Course for Coastal Resource Managers

This new two-day course equips coastal resource agencies with the knowledge needed to make the most productive use of remotely sensed data and information. Attendees will learn the benefits and limitations of remote sensing, understand how to use this resource in a geographic information system (GIS) environment, and see how remotely sensed data are being used in the field of coastal resource management.

Students should have basic ArcView® skills before attending this class. Classes will be held at the NOAA Coastal Services Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Class size is limited, so early registration is suggested.

Getting and Keeping the Public's Interest

Keeping the public involved in long-term coastal resource management initiatives can be difficult. A new Web-based product from the Center can help.

The Performance Indicators Visualization and Outreach Tool (PIVOT) uses graphics and maps to help users understand complex coastal management issues and visually link these issues to corresponding management actions. PIVOT is in use in Tillamook County, Oregon, and at the Environmental Protection Agency National Estuary Program headquarters.

The Center is developing a step-by-step program that will help other coastal programs create their own PIVOT. A preview workshop is tentatively scheduled for spring 2002. If you are interested in participating, e-mail Nancy.Cofer-Shabica@noaa.gov.

Ecological Characterization Funding Available for the Great Lakes Region

An ecological characterization is a comprehensive, digital source of information and data. Like many comprehensive management tools, characterizations rarely get the funding and personnel needed to undertake and complete the job.

The NOAA Coastal Services Center can help your program realize this dream. You determine your project goals, and the Center will work with you to get the necessary funding and expertise.

Each year the Center focuses its efforts on a specific region of the country. Kachemak Bay, Alaska, was the site of the most recently completed characterization project. Order a copy of this CD-ROM at www.csc.noaa.gov/clearinghouse/.

This year, proposals are being solicited from the Great Lakes region. Visit the Web site for information about the project selection process.
