GREAT BALLS OF FIRE!
CZ01 Conference Gets Ready to Rock and Roll
Coastal resource management issues will get a rock and roll sound track this summer at the Coastal Zone 01 (CZ01) conference in Cleveland, Ohio, home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The conference's combination of innovative ideas and good music will make for a bold, informative, and inspirational meeting—and an unabashedly fun time.
This 12th biennial international symposium will feature important lessons learned by coastal managers around the world and models of successful partnerships. Holding the conference in Cleveland, one of the Great Lakes' premier coastal cities, provides an outstanding opportunity to examine how local and regional issues are connected to worldwide influences of culture, commerce, climate, and biology.
In keeping with the city's strong rock and roll tradition, music will help express the conference's theme, "Hands Across the Water" (The Beatles)—Linking Land, Lake, and Sea. Workshops, plenaries, and the expected 100 concurrent sessions will be related to four central topics:
"Taking Care of Business"
(Bachman-Turner Overdrive)
Sustainable Coastal Communities
Discussion on this subject will examine creative urban planning strategies, fiscal incentives, innovative policies, and other techniques to achieve "smart growth" in coastal communities. Sessions will cover everything from beach protection and shoreline management to wetlands restoration.
"Son of a Son of a Sailor"
(Jimmy Buffett)
Maritime Transportation and Commerce
Ocean ships, bulk cargo carriers, tug-propelled barges, and cruise ships operate in a system linked with energy, agriculture, industry, and travel and tourism. This area, incorporating the ultimate goal of environment-friendly maritime commerce, will cover everything from bio-invasive species to trade policies and practices.
"Everyday People"
(Sly and the Family Stone)
People and the Coast
Values and choices made by people in their work, home, and community ultimately determine coastal environmental health and community well being. Topics will include everything from citizen activism to tribal issues to urban populations.
"Here Comes the Sun"
(The Beatles)
Energy and the Environment
The production, transport, and use of energy resources have profound impacts on coastal resources and communities. Economic and quality of life concerns need to be addressed at every level—homeowner, neighborhood, community, industry, and government. Topics will include everything from alternative fuels and technologies to impacts of sea level rise and climate change.

In addition to the stimulating sessions, Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum will provide participants with after-conference entertainment and activities. CZ01 will begin with a special 5K fun run/walk and will end with a waterside reception featuring a rock and roll band and dancing.
More than 1,200 people are expected to attend CZ01, which will be held July 15 through 19 at the Cleveland Convention Center. Registration deadline is June 1.
