National OCM Strategic Action Workshop
Message From the Co-Chairs
The Interagency Working Group on Ocean and Coastal Mapping (IWG-OCM)
is hosting a workshop to support the development of a National Ocean
and Coastal Mapping Strategic Action Plan. The Strategic Action Plan
will address OCM issues and recommendations identified in the U.S.
Ocean Action Plan (OAP), the Energy Policy Act of 2005, OMB Circular
A-16 (Coordination of Geographic Infrastructure and Related Spatial
Data Activities), and the National Research Council (NRC) Report,
A Geospatial Framework for the Coastal Zone - National Needs for Coastal
Mapping and Charting. The workshop will bring together key individuals
from federal agencies and non-federal partners and stakeholders to
frame a Strategic Action Plan designed to expand, improve and/or develop
(a) coordination and partnerships; (b) data collection, availability,
dissemination, interoperability, and standardization; and (c) products
and tools required of ocean and coastal geospatial data users. Workshop
objectives include:
- Reviewing and addressing recommendations resulting from the OAP
and the NRC Report, as well as the requirements addressed in the
Energy Policy Act and OMB Circular A-16
- Building consensus on vision, strategy, goals, objectives, priorities,
and actions for implementing a National Ocean and Coastal Mapping
Strategic Plan
- Identifying federal agency roles and responsibilities to ensure
the successful implementation of the Strategic Action Plan
- Developing an implementation strategy to include priorities for
early success, timelines and milestones, partnerships for resource
synergies, and resources required
- Identifying potential opportunities for integrating non-federal
mapping efforts into a national framework
We expect 40 workshop participants will attend, including:
- Representatives of federal and federally-funded organizations
that collect, manage, disseminate, or use ocean and coastal mapping
activities
- Non-federal partners and individuals engaged in ocean and coastal
mapping activities, including state and regional mapping interests
- Individuals who have knowledge and experience that would contribute
to the development of the Ocean and Coastal Mapping Strategic Action
Plan
The workshop may include presentations about federal and non-federal
OCM activities, in addition to working sessions to develop goals,
objectives and action plans. Portions of the meeting are open to the
public with time set aside for the public to make formal comments
to the workshop participants.
We look forward to your participation in this workshop.
