Pacific Islands Geographic Information System (GIS) Project

Other NOAA Projects

This page is intended to highlight other National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) activities in the region that may be useful when working with a geographic information system (GIS). This list is not intended to be exhaustive. You can always access the NOAA Web site for additional data sources.

Charts

The Office of Coast Survey is continually working on updating nautical charts in the region.

Water Levels

The Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) collects and distributes observations and predictions of water levels, currents, and sea level rise trends.

Corals

The Coral Reef Information System (CoRIS) is designed to be a single point of access to NOAA coral reef information and data products. You can search for data or download benthic habitat maps.

Assistantship Program

Personnel for this project have been funded by the Coastal Services Center through an agreement with the Environmental Careers Organization. Search the Environmental Careers Organization Web site for job opportunities.

Geodetic Control

The National Geodetic Survey works to support all aspects of the geodetic reference frame for the region.

Hazards

The Office of Response and Restoration has tools and information for emergency responders and planners. Environmental Sensitivity Index (ESI) maps can be used in GIS for planning and response.

Marine Protected Areas

Identify the two National Marine Sanctuaries that are located in the region or read general information and search for data on marine protected areas.

General

The National Ocean Service Pacific Services Center is located in Honolulu, Hawaii, and is working to bring NOAA resources to the region. E-mail NOS Pacific Services Center staff to find out more about mapping-related activities.

Mapfinder is a one-stop Web site for finding many National Ocean Service data sets, such as bathymetry, geodetic control, raster charts, or photography. Search Mapfinder for on-line data.

Sea Grant is a partnership between NOAA and the nation's educational institutions and Hawaii Sea Grant specifically serves the Pacific region.

Fisheries is dedicated to protecting and preserving our nation's living marine resources through scientific research. You can access data specific to the Pacific at the Honolulu Laboratory.

Sea surface temperature data can be accessed from the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service.
