Imagery Activities

Since 2000, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been involved in acquiring high-resolution imagery to support mapping activities in the Pacific Islands. These activities include mapping the diverse coral reef ecosystems in the Pacific Islands, as well as creating baseline terrestrial data for coastal management and planning. NOAA purchased new and archived IKONOS satellite imagery of American Samoa, Guam, CNMI, and Hawaii in 2001 and 2002. In addition, newly acquired Quickbird satellite imagery was purchased for Hawaii in 2002. NOAA also has a limited archive of aerial photography for the Pacific Islands.

IKONOS imagery was purchased to support NOAA coral reef mapping activities and Pacific Islands coastal management and planning activities. View the complete list and status of NOAA IKONOS purchases for the Pacific Islands. For more information about IKONOS imagery, please visit the Space Imaging Web site.

In 2002, the Coastal Services Center purchased Quickbird imagery of the Waianae watershed in Hawaii. The data will be used for land cover mapping and watershed analysis. For more information about Quickbird imagery, please visit the Digital Globe Web site.

The NOAA National Geodetic Survey has an archive of aerial photography for Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. The photography can be viewed through the NOS Data Explorer Web site.
