Coastal Watershed Planning
The GIS Integration and Development program supports coastal managers who are working to balance the increasing pressures of growth and development in coastal watersheds.
Coastal watershed counties comprise less than 25 percent of the land area in the United States, yet they are home to more than 52 percent of the U.S. population. The pressures that growth creates in coastal areas are generated by activities not only at the shore, but also miles inland in watersheds that drain into and directly impact coastal resources. Thus, a watershed approach to conservation and development planning is needed.
GIS I&D projects range from funding work on regional conservation priorities and supporting collaborative planning efforts to providing GIS tools, data, and visualizations for conservation and development planning and outreach.
Partnerships for Coastal Conservation
- Maine Coast Protection Initiative
- The Nature Conservancy, Global Marine Initiative
- The Center is supporting new methods for developing spatially explicit conservation plans integrating knowledge about terrestrial, freshwater, and marin ecosystems at a regional scale. Visit the project summary report.
- Coastal Conservation Networking
- The Center is working with the Land Trust Alliance and The Nature Conservancy to strengthen communication and collaboration between conservation organizations and a wide range of partners in the coastal zone.
- Northern California
- The Center is working with the California Coastal Conservancy and local partners to assess regional coastal conservation needs and to support conservation efforts in the region that cross the land-sea interface.
