Development of a Dynamic and Distributed GIS to Support Coastal Management along the Wisconsin Lake Superior Coast

June 2003 to June 2005Grant Project Area Map

Project Summary

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Land Information and Computer Graphics Facility, the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, and the NOAA Coastal Services Center entered a cooperative agreement to link local Web mapping services and to build an interoperable coastal geographic information system (GIS). The project resulted in Web mapping tools and GIS data integration systems for use by the Lake Superior coastal counties of Wisconsin. These systems can help support coastal management along the Lake Superior coast of Wisconsin.

NOAA Coastal Services Center's Role

The NOAA Coastal Services Center helped the investigators understand how their efforts fit into a national picture. The Center collaborated in extending the research on integrated and interoperable, geographic information system (GIS) for coastal hazards and smart growth to a national audience through many activities, including publishing project summaries and reports on the Center's Web site, sponsoring workshops outside Wisconsin to demonstrate how interoperable Web mapping services can be used in coastal management, and by facilitating the presentation of project findings in federal forums on initiatives such as the National Map and the Geospatial One-Stop.

Grantee Overview

The mission of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Land Information and Computer Graphics Facility is to provide research, training, and outreach in the use of land and geographic information systems. Established in 1982, the facility houses nine faculty members and a research assistant. The mission focuses on land records modernization, land and natural resource management applications, and the use of information for land-use decision making. The University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, another partner for the project, is a statewide program of basic and applied research, education, and outreach and technology transfer dedicated to the stewardship and sustainable use of the nation's Great Lakes and ocean resources.
