A Coastal Data Information Server System for the Gulf Intra-coastal Waterway and Adjoining Bay Waters of Southwest Florida

September 2002 to August 2004 Grant Project Area Map

Project Summary

Florida Sea Grant has gathered many data sets relating to the southwest Florida coast. These data were archived and included historical and modern aerial photography, scanned historic hydrographic and topographic maps and bathymetry interpreted from them, and depths, sea grass extent, and bottom characteristics in 16 popular recreational vessel anchorages. These data were archived as both paper-based and digital files. This project helped rescue, document, and make universally available the various types of archived data created and acquired by Florida Sea Grant in Florida coastal waters using Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) and Library of Congress standards to help coastal resource managers find, retrieve, and use the data. The significance and uses of this data to coastal resource management include depth and shoreline changes, environmental changes, shore development, permitting, marine protected area definition, and other activities.

NOAA Coastal Services Center's Role

Grantee Overview

Florida Sea Grant is a State University System Center with a statewide mandate. The University of Florida in Gainesville serves as the host campus. Florida Sea Grant’s mission is to enhance the practical use and conservation of coastal and marine resources to create a sustainable economy and environment. The Florida Sea Grant College Program focuses on marine and coastal issues across research, education and extension activities. Florida Sea Grant programs are also multi-disciplinary in nature. Research is funded on a statewide, competitive basis. Education programs focus on funding graduate students using public and private funds. An organized extension outreach program, using both on-campus and off-campus faculty, combines faculty and student research results into formats the public can use, and it provides stakeholder needs in research to the faculty and students.
