Grant Project Summary:
National States Geographic Information
Council
Random Access Metadata Tool for Online National Assessments - Phase 1 and 2
March 2004 to February 2005
Project Summary
The National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC) entered into a cooperative agreement with the NOAA Coastal Services Center to develop a national-level, state-based inventory of geospatial data, policies, and technology to replace the multitude of state and federal survey efforts with a consistent, locally implemented living inventory. The inventory instrument designed a Web-based tool with dynamic functionality, such as automatic metadata generation, status maps, reporting functions, and Rolodex applications. It addressed the common information elements based on stakeholders needs, including status of GIS programs, platforms, connectivity, policy issues, data, and issues assessment. The product is available to all national interests, and NSGIC state coordinators who can implement its use through local coordination efforts. The tool and its results are available through the Geospatial One Stop portal. This funding proposal is for phases one, and two which include the user needs assessment and requirements analysis.
NOAA Coastal Services Center's Role
The NOAA Coastal Services Center participated as a member of the project management team. Center employees supported the development and implementation of the needs assessment and requirements analysis.
