Grant Project Summary:
Louisiana Universities Marine
Consortium
Restructuring and Automating LUMCON's Environmental Monitoring Systems (LEMS)
March 2004 to February 2005
Project Summary
The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium operates a system of coastal monitoring stations as a means of bringing coastal environmental information to
students, researchers, and other interested parties. Data are updated at one-minute intervals, and all data are freely available through the Internet. Stations
collect data on meteorological and hydrographic parameters, such as water level, temperature, and salinity. Some stations also measure turbidity, chlorophyll,
and dissolved nitrate. The consortium proposed a series of improvements to its data handling, display, and distribution protocols that are consistent with national
standards. These improvements are aimed to make user access to the data simpler and more transparent. Data records were cataloged on the Louisiana Universities Marine
Consortium metadata server.
NOAA Coastal Services Center's Role
This is a grant project and NOAA did not have substantial involvement in
the work.
Grantee Overview
The Louisiana
Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON), located in Cocodrie,
Louisiana, was formed in 1979 with a goal of coordinating and stimulating Louisiana's
activities in marine research and education. LUMCON is a state-controlled institution
of higher learning that provides coastal laboratory facilities to Louisiana
universities and conducts research and educational programs in the marine
sciences. LUMCON is governed by a six-member executive board comprised of chief
executive officers of Louisiana State University and A&M College, Nicholls
State University, and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This board
reports to the Louisiana State Board of Regents.
LUMCON is a member of the
Southern Association of Marine Laboratories (SAML), the National Association
of Marine Laboratories (NAML), the Organization of
Biological Field Stations (OBFS), and the Consortium for Oceanographic Research
and Education (CORE).
