Grant Project Summary:
University of South Carolina, Baruch Institute for Marine
Biology
Coastal Nutrient, Water
Quality, Toxic Algal Data, and Metadata Dissemination
June 2003 to May 2004
Project Summary
A major focus of the Baruch Institute has been links among coastal zone population
growth, eutrophication, and toxic algal blooms. There have been many
studies on this topic, but due to time constraints, researchers have
had a difficult time documenting and disseminating their data. Through
this grant project, the Institute will coalesce, certify, archive, and
document these nutrient and toxic algae databases from South Carolina,
ensuring that through accurate and detailed metadata, they will be both
useful and accessible to the research and management community.
NOAA Coastal Services Center
Role
This was a grant project and the NOAA Coastal Services Center did not have
substantial involvement with the work.
Grantee Overview
The Belle
W. Baruch Institute for Marine Biology and Coastal Research was
established in 1969 by a joint effort of the University of South Carolina
and and the Belle W. Baruch Foundation. Located in Georgetown County,
along the upper South Carolina coast, the Institute is home to approximately
70 university faculty members, 35 technicians, and 25 students. The
Institute strives to bring together scientists whose perspectives and
expertise enable a more complete approach to wise use and sustainability.
The Baruch Institute conducts basic research on environmental processes
in tidal, estuarine, and coastal ocean environments. Studies span the
molecular to landscape level, including efforts of human activities.
