The GIS Integration and Development Program
Grant Project Summary:
Geological Survey of Alabama
Rescuing and Documenting Toxic Pollutant Data Sets for the Mobile Delta and
Bay
March 2004 to August 2005
Project Summary
The Geological Survey of Alabama's project, conducted in conjunction with the Fish and Wildlife Service, NOAA, the U.S. Geological Society, and the Mobile
Bay National Estuary Program, focused on rescuing, documenting, and distributing the most important toxic pollutant data sets available for the Mobile Delta and
Bay. Phase one of the project consisted of identification, acquisition, and prioritization of digital and white paper data sets of toxic pollutant data for the
Mobile Delta and Bay. The second phase developed 30 to 50 GIS-ready data sets and documented them with the Federal Geographic Data Committee-compliant metadata.
The project resulted in well-documented and easily accessible toxic pollutant data to local, state, and federal agencies, business and industrial firms involved
in the economic development of coastal Alabama, and organizations involved in protecting and improving the environment.
NOAA Coastal Services Center's Role
This was a grant project and NOAA did not have substantial involvement in the work.
