BackgroundThe Mission of the Ecological Applications ProgramThe mission of the Ecological Applications program is to provide coastal resource managers with improved access to the information, tools, and approaches they need for restoration planning and ecosystem-based management of coastal habitats. As part of this mission, the program plays a crucial role in the classification and mapping of benthic habitat and leads the NOAA Coastal Services Center’s efforts in the development and application of climate information for coastal resource management. Tools and ServicesInformation Translation. Ecological Applications delivers information to describe ecosystem services related to habitat functions. The program works with partners to develop specialized ecological and climate content for Web-based and other information resources, education, and training. The program also assists its partners with synthesis and translation of research to enhance the formulation of practical decision-making processes. Application of Habitat and Climate Data Products. The program develops geospatial tools and other applications (such asvisualization tools) for habitat restoration planning. Ecological Applications also works to ensure that climate data and information are appropriately reflected in coastal resource management, planning, and decision-making. In addition to developing tools, staff members identify, assemble, and deliver best management practices and guidance documents to their partners and customers to use in coastal decision-making. Part of this process includes developing methods for prioritizing habitats for restoration. Communication and Networking. Ecological Applications works to build and enhance partnerships in the climate and restoration communities through workshops, special interest meetings, and other venues. This level of networking allows for analysis of customer needs, as well as gathering feedback on products and services of the NOAA Coastal Services Center. |
