Introduction to Lidar

Upcoming Training Opportunities

Overview

One of the main benefits of using lidar data for developing shoreline data is the ability to derive a true datum-based shoreline—one that is tied to a single specific tidal datum elevation, such as mean high water. These online tutorials guide users through the process of using the VDatum tool to convert lidar data to a tidal datum and extracting a shoreline contour using ArcGIS. Another advantage of using lidar is its efficiency. Shoreline extraction from proxies such as the vegetation line, dunes toe, and high-water line requires visual interpretation in the field or from imagery, making the process of shoreline extraction from these sources time-consuming and subject to human interpretation.

What You Will Learn

After completing these tutorials, participants will be able to

  • Convert lidar data to a tidal reference system using the VDatum tool
  • Use ArcMap 10.0 to create a TIN and extract a shoreline contour
