About Matthew Carey

I am a Spatial Analyst at the NOAA Coastal Services Center in Charleston, South Carolina. My work involves the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for understanding coastal hazards and aiding in community resiliency.

Growing up in the South Carolina lowcountry, I developed a strong interest in the interaction between people and the coastal environment. This, paired with my love of history, brought me to study archaeology at the University of South Carolina, where I received a bachelor’s in anthropology and focused on prehistoric Native American living in the Southeast coast. My desire to work with modern-day coastal issues led me to enroll in the master of geography program at East Carolina University to study the implementation of GIS for coastal planning and management.

When I’m not studying the coast from the safety of my desk, I enjoy experiencing it firsthand via paddle boarding, surfing, diving, and kayaking….oh, and I’m a pizzaholic.
