I am an oceanographer with the NOAA Coastal Services Center in Charleston, South Carolina. Actually, I've done very little oceanography since coming here, but I still like to think that is what I am. At NOAA, I do a variety of activities, all, in general, aimed at making technical information more accessible and usable by coastal managers. These include leading the design and development of, and training on, GIS tools for examining impacts of land use change on imperviousness, water quality, and erosion; helping NOAA get more climate information accessible; and working on the Historical Hurricane Track tool. And, yes, I do like The Hobbit quite a bit. I read it 22 times before I was 18 and then stopped counting. What can I say? When you grow up in Idaho, your entertainment options are limited.
What if you don’t have a herd of nerds around to provide you with the needed expertise in GIS, data processing, cartography and Web know-how to make an interactive map? It turns out that there is a solution.
