Shipping Safety Fairway
A lane or corridor in which no artificial island or fixed structure, whether temporary or permanent, will be permitted. Temporary underwater obstacles may be permitted under certain conditions described for specific areas in Subpart B of the Code of Federal Regulations. Aids to navigation approved by the U.S. Coast Guard may be established in a fairway.

Precautionary Area
An area within defined limits where ships must navigate with particular caution.

Shipping Traffic Lane
An area within defined limits in which specific traffic flow is established. Designates traffic areas to provide access routes for vessels proceeding to and from U.S. ports.

Offshore Traffic Separation Scheme
A designated routing measure that separates opposing streams of traffic by appropriate means and by the establishment of traffic lanes.

Ship Reporting Systems
Two mandatory ship reporting systems for the protection of the endangered northern right whale (also known as the North Atlantic right whale). These two systems are designated for certain areas of the East Coast of the U.S.
