Regional Data: Yakutat Bay, Alaska, Land Cover Change

Period

1986 – 1993

Land cover map of the Yakutat Bay, AK area

Description

The change detection was conducted with Landsat TM imagery (Path 62, Row 18) that covered the area from Icy Bay to Yakutat Bay. This project was undertaken because of a unique request from the National Marine Fisheries Service's Auke Bay Laboratory. Auke Bay Laboratory scientists were looking for assistance in monitoring possible affects of glacial movement on local salmon stocks. The Hubbard capable of short periods of extremely rapid movement. It is expected that movement by the Hubbard Glacier in the near future will block the entrance to the Russell Fjord. If the glacier closes the fjord, it will affect the flow of the Situk River, an important run for the area's salmon fishery.

A descriptive summary of this data set is available in Portable Document Format (PDF). The summary includes a report of the dominant land cover changes, tabular summaries of the 1986 and 1993 land cover data sets, and a change matrix (or tabular summary) for the 1986-1993 change dataset.
