Hurricane Emily is over Cape Hatteras, NC in the afternoon of August 31 in this striking view.

All the data in this image were derived from the visible, near and thermal IR bands from the AVHRR aboard the NOAA-11 satellite. The image was created by draping an RGB image over a digital elevation model (DEM) generated from cloud top temperatures. The DEM was derived from an inverted channel 4 band (thermal IR) while the RGB image was created using channel 4, channel 2 (near IR) , and channel 1 (visible). The perspective view represents an elevation of 86° from horizontal. The date of this scene is August 31, 1993 at 20:59 UTC.
