Visible band water reflectance satellite imagery derived from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) is a powerful tool for characterizing water clarity conditions in many larger coastal bays and estuaries. It is an especially appropriate tool for retrospectively assessing the water clarity in Florida Bay, Florida, where seagrass die-offs resulted in increasingly turbid conditions.
The Florida Bay Imagery and Information CD-ROM is a collection of over 1500 AVHRR reflectance images from 1985 to 1998 at a 1 kilometer spatial resolution. Monthly and seasonal derived averages allow the user to quickly document and observe water clarity trends and patterns. The images can be browsed using any HTML browser and are also available in a GeoTIFF image format. The GeoTIFF format is suitable for import into GIS and image processing software for further analysis. In addition to the reflectance imagery, a coincident set of sea surface temperature images are available. Additional environmental data on the CD-ROM include digital vector coverages, meteorological data, and water quality data. A more complete description can be found here.
