Pacific
Islands Assistantship Program
2001–2003 Pacific Island AssistantsThe first assistants were placed to work on integration of spatial technology into island coastal management issues. The assistants focused on understanding the coastal agency’s programmatic needs, developing suitable technological solutions, and using innovative methods to help other program staff members understand and use the technology. Assistants also built upon and created new partnerships with other geographic information system (GIS) users on the islands through activities such as GIS user groups, GIS Day, and training opportunities.
2001-2003 Assistants, left to right: Ken Cochrane (CNMI), James
Byrne (Guam), Each assistant had projects that demonstrated GIS functionality within the coastal management program. Additionally, an important component of each assistant’s work was the development of materials that documented his or her work and activities. The purpose of the documentation was to give existing and future staff members a reference that included information about hardware, software, training opportunities, maintenance contacts and contracts, data, metadata, applications, and links to other relevant reference material. Assistants were also involved in the NOAA Coastal Services Center's Pacific Islands GIS project, an ongoing effort that was designed to increase the use of GIS and related spatial technology in each island’s coastal management program. 2001–2003 Assistants: (Each name is linked to that assistant’s project work plan in Portable Document Format, which can be viewed with Adobe® Reader® or a similar tool.)
