2003-2005 Project Summaries


American Samoa:

Virginia Farmer worked with the American Samoa Coastal Management Program in Pago Pago to provide assistance in developing and implementing the local action strategies for overfishing, unregulated development, global climate change, and population pressure. Virginia supported the implementation of Coral Reef Advisory Group initiatives in the areas of education and outreach, coral reef monitoring, and nonpoint source pollution. She also supported the Coral Reef Advisory Group's reporting and planning activities.

Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands:

Qamar Schuyler worked with the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Coastal Resources Management Office in Saipan to develop and implement a coral reef education and outreach program. She researched existing education and outreach efforts to identify gaps. Finally, Qamar developed and distributed new education and outreach materials to evaluate their effects.

Guam:

John Tomczuk worked with the Guam Coastal Management Program in Adelup to coordinate and monitor the coral grants administered by the agency.  John also worked with stakeholders to further develop and implement the Local Action Strategies (LAS) developed for Guam, including recreational misuse and overuse, disease/coral bleaching/climate change, land-based sources of pollution, fisheries management, and lack of public awareness.

Hawaii:

Melissa Bos worked with the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources in Honolulu to assist in the coordination and implementation of local action strategies relating to land-based pollutants and coral reef fisheries. She also assisted in the initial development of a local action strategy for recreational overuse.

Puerto Rico:

Mayra Suarez worked with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources in San Juan to assist in finalizing a coral reef management plan that addresses the coordination and implementation of local action strategies relating to overfishing, lack of awareness, recreational overuse and land-based sources of pollution. She coordinated with local action strategy core committees to develop a coral reef management plan and to assist in developing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed coral reef management plan. Finally, Mayra coordinated meetings and preparing presentations to elicit public comments on the proposed coral reef management plan.

U.S. Virgin Islands:

Susan Curtis worked with the U.S. Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management Program in St. Croix to develop and implement coral reef and nonpoint source education and outreach programs for the East End Marine Park. She researched existing education and outreach efforts to identify gaps. Finally, Susan developed and distributed new education and outreach materials to evaluate their effects.
