Types of libraries

There are three types of libraries: public, college, and special. Depending
on where you live, you may not have all three types available to you. However,
most areas have access to a college library that participates in an interlibrary
loan program.

- Large main branches are your best bet
- Most have an extensive reference collection (dictionaries, encyclopedias, indexes, etc.)
- Most also provide electronic resources such as Internet access and databases on CD-ROM

- Typically have more information sources than the average public library
- Many are open to the public
- Collection reflects the academic majors and specialties of the school

 |
- Included in this category are libraries that are run by corporations, associations, or governments, or libraries that specialize in a particular subject
- Public access tends to vary. In many cases patrons can use materials but not check them out
- If you are unable to use the resources of a special library, ask about an interlibrary loan
