Synopsis of Lessons

Academic: Professional Disciplines

This section provides a simplified, yet valuable look at the factors that affect the decision making of practitioners from a variety of fields relevant to coastal management. Coastal professionals often must gather information from and collaborate with practitioners from such fields as engineering, law, media, sociology, etc. By better understanding the methods and motivations of different professions, you will be able to make better use of these practitioners expertise in your decision making.

Wetlands Mitigation Case Study

This case study ties together many of the concepts being presented in the entire Survival Skills for Coastal Resource Managers course. The learner is walked through a potential mitigation project in which many factors must be taken into account, and the expertise of many other professionals must be accessed. While the scenario itself may be seen as less than realistic, it does help remind us just how complex and even politically convoluted coastal management can be.

Short Thinking Exercises

This section of the course provides a few one page, thought-provoking inquiries into ways to better communications among coastal professionals and stakeholders. For each one you will be asked to write down some of your ideas, then compare them with our suggestions. The suggestions being provided are not the only correct answers, but are merely a starting point for your consideration.

Overview of State Coastal Program Structures

State coastal programs can be administratively structured in a few different ways, depending on their focus and history. This unit provides an overview of the state programs based on their structure, with links to more detailed information on each program.

CZMA Quick Tour

This section gives an overview of the purpose and goals of the act, then breaks it down section by section, highlighting the main points of which you should be aware while cutting out much of the legal jargon.

Federal Agencies - Responsibilities

This section looks at them based on their overall level of responsibilty for decisions, noting the specific tasks with which each agency is concerned. Even though you are probably aware of the large number of stakeholders involved in management decisions, you may be surprised by some of the agencies that can potentially get involved.
