Quick Exercise Number 1

Possible Strategies

OK... what did you come up with? We've listed some of our ideas below. Please be aware that these are not all inclusive. Different practitioners may have additional or different key strategies. Whatever you do, keep in mind the purpose is to stimulate thought on how to improve communication among scientists and policy-makers when working on coastal management issues.

  • Include scientists from multiple disciplines, policymakers, and a representative(s) from the public on the research committee. May want to consider the inclusion of someone from the media to provide fact-based reports to the public during the research and data collection process, and to assist with information dissemination.
  • The research committee develops a data collection plan based on the information needed, and a dissemination plan to send information to appropriate audiences in a timely manner.
  • Seek advice from policymakers about their needs with regard to the project, how they can use the research data, and when they will need the information gained from the research.
  • Seek assistance from policymakers and the public concerning what resources may be available to support the collection and analysis of data.
  • Work with scientists, policymakers, public, and media to translate research findings into a language and format that can best be understood by target audiences.
