Climate Data

Climate Data Image
Coastal climatologies are developed from atmospheric, water, and land-based data collected over time at various observation stations.

An international effort is underway to build and sustain a global climate observing network for use in forecasts, research, and scientific assessments. With the world's largest archive of climate data, the NOAA National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) oversees the nation's oceans, Great Lakes, and land observations to meet the requirements of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS). The NOAA Coastal Services Center provides support for this global climate network through efforts of the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) network of observations, data management, data analysis, and modeling to acquire and disseminate data and information on the past and future state of the oceans.

Types of climate data:

Atmospheric
  • Wind speed and direction
  • Precipitation type and amount
  • Cloud cover
  • Pressure
  • Visibility
  • Temperature
  • Relative humidity
  • Air quality
  • Ozone
  • Ultraviolet index
Water-based
  • Temperature
  • Density
  • Salinity
  • Current
  • Wave height
  • Water level
  • Chlorophyll
  • Algal blooms
  • Dissolved oxygen
  • Turbidity
Land-based
  • Land cover
  • Land use
  • Elevation
  • Point source pollution discharges
  • Nonpoint source pollution loads
  • Soil type
  • Soil permeability
  • Soil moisture

Sources of climate data include:

NOAA National Climatic Data Center (NCDC)
NCDC is the world's largest archive of climate data covering the land and oceans including extreme events and global hazards.

NOAA National Data Buoy Center (NDBC)
NDBC provides access to quality controlled real-time and historical data from coastal and marine-based platforms such as buoys, and Coastal-Marine Automated Network (C-MAN) stations.

NOAA Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS)
NOAA CO-OPS collects and distributes observations and predictions of water level and currents.

NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC)
NODC manages the acquisition, processing, quality control, and long-term preservation of oceanographic data.

NOAA National Coastal Data Development Center (NCDDC)
NCDDC provides access to the nation's coastal data resources through integration of diverse repositories using searchable metadata catalog.

NOAA nowCOAST
NowCoast is a Web-based mapping portal to real time coastal observations and NOAA forecasts.

U.S. Climate Reference Network (USCRN)
USCRN is a network of climate stations that provide homogeneous observations of temperature and precipitation for climate change detection and monitoring.
