When planning a benthic habitat mapping study, there are three important considerations to address:

  1. What questions are you trying to answer?
  2. What types of data do you need to answer these questions?
  3. What logistical constraints do you have to consider?

Answering these three questions is critical to developing a benthic mapping strategy, since decisions regarding data collection methodology and sampling plan will greatly influence how any derived data can be analyzed and interpreted. Additionally, cost and time constraints will limit the range of practical options for plan implementation.
