The Disposal Area Monitoring System (DAMOS) uses a three-tiered monitoring approach to
assess biological impacts at disposal sites (re-created from Germano and others 1994). The
first tier uses sediment profile imaging (SPI) to assess benthic community condition. The
second tier focuses on sediment physical properties, and the third tier focuses on the
potential for sediment chemistry to affect colonization rates and population density.
