Two types of capping are often used at dredged material disposal sites. The first is known
as "level-bottom capping" (LBC). This involves placing the contaminated material on
the seafloor in a rounded configuration or mound. The mound is then covered with clean sediment.
The other type of capping is called "contained aquatic disposal" (CAD). CAD employs
some sort of lateral confinement to prevent contaminated materials from spreading along the
seafloor. Methods include placing the material in an existing bottom depression, a constructed pit,
or within berms constructed on the seafloor.
