SPI Habitat DataThis project was initiated by the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences and the Chesapeake Bay NERR to map benthic habitats by Catlett and Goodwin Islands on the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. The goal of this project was to better understand the relationship between blue crabs and their habitat.

Sampling areas were surveyed using side scan sonar, interferometric swath bathymetry sensors, sediment grabs, and sediment profile imaging in October 2002 to document the distribution and occurrence of benthic habitats, bottom types, and invertebrate communities. Subsets of the stations sampled in 2002 were resampled in 2003 and 2004 for comparison purposes. Data sets from all years are available. Identification and enumeration of infauna, biomass, and benthic community parameters were measured from the benthic grab samples.

The Center's role in this project included funding and technical support for data collection and analysis.
