Northeast Region: New York / New Jersey Harbor SPI, Grab, and Bathymetry Data Sets 1994-1995

This project was initiated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to address their need for benthic habitat maps in NY / NJ Harbor. This was critical for developing a plan for dredged material management that was both economically feasible and environmentally sound.

Benthic grab data and sediment profile imagery (SPI) data were taken concurrently to document the distribution and occurrence of benthic habitats and invertebrate communities. The overall objective was to provide background information to plan cost-effective, spatially focused studies for siting dredged material disposal and habitat restoration within the NY / NJ Harbor. Bathymetry grids were derived from NOAA hydrographic survey data.

This study was primarily funded by the USACE; additional funding for data analysis and technical support was provided by the Center. For detailed information, please see the Benthic Habitats of the NY / NJ Harbor Web site.
